Alf Svensson stuided at what today is HDK Gothenburg University and was hired as a designer by Dux in 1949. During the 1950’s, Svensson became one of the most productive furniture designers of the Swedish 20th, creating pieces for a.o. the H55 exhibition in Helsingborg 1955. In 1952 and -53 Svensson designed, inspired by American furniture, two armchairs without armrest Dux; Interiör and Te-Ve. The later was made by Dux Studio with the brand new television concept in mind.
In 1955 Svensson got his real breakthrough with Contour, an armchair with an adjustable back rest, which was followed by Contour Roto in 1958. Duxiesta, that Svensson designed together with Folke Ohlsson in 1959, was made by Dux for the American market.
In 1961, Svensson left Dux to establish his own company S-design together with Yngvar Sandström. S-design's most well-known piece was Galaxy from 1971, made of form molded plastic. Due to its tall back, a very advanced method was needed to construct the armchair. A special tool was constructed during a year to the cost of half a million Swedish kronor to create Galaxy. Thankfully the armchair became an international success for manufacturer Dux.
