Chris Martin studied at the Royal College of Art in London from 1993 to 1995 whereafter he started working in British designer Jasper Morrison's studio. After having collaborated with Swedish designers Thomas Eriksson and Thomas Sandell, he moved to Sweden. For a couple of year Martin worked in the architectural office of Sandell, but also began a collaboration with Magnus Elebäck and Carl Öjerstam with whom he, in 1999, founded a joint design studio Massproductions. Ten years later Martin and Elebäck developed Massproductions into their own furniture brand.
Massproductions works with design, production, distribution, and marketing. In 2005, Martin designed the rocking chair Ellan for IKEA’s fifth PS collection that ha a theme of recycling and sustainability. Ellan was made of wood waste and recyclable plastic and differed from IKEA's normal concept while it didn't require any tools for assembly.
Massproductions' first product range was the furniture collection Tio (eng. Ten) in 2009, made of ten-millimeter-thick steel wire. The chair from Tio was awarded the Golden Chair by Architects Sweden and chosen as the best new furniture at the Designx fair in Sidney the same year. Tio is a part of the collection at the Swedish National Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Furniture Studies, both in Stockholm.
Other well known pieces by Martin are the Colossus table, the bar stool Odette and the stool Harry. In 2016 Chris Martin became a Swedish citizen and in 2020 he was the recipient of the Bruno Mathsson prize.
