Marit Stigsdotter started out as a ship builder at the famous shipyard Storebro in Småland. After only a year, Stigsdotter chose to exchange boats with furniture, when she began her studies in furniture crafts and design at Carl Malmsten’s school Capellagården in Öland.
Since 1990, Stigsdotter runs her own design studio in Gothenburg where she works with clients including Stolab, Albin and NC Nordic Care. For Stolab, Stigsdotter designed one of her first pieces, the wooden stool Sgabello.
Besides her work as a designer, Stigsdotter is an educator in design and carpentry at a.o. Träcentrum in Nässjö and earlier at Capellagården in Öland. She has also written and published books on design, materials, and crafts.
Stigsdotter was a part of the Female Traces exhibition of the Museum of Furniture Studies in Stockholm 2019/2020.
