Ole Wanscher studied for Kaare Klint at the Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi in Copenhagen and later also worked for Klint from 1925 to 1927, where after Wanscher founded his own studio. In 1955 Wanscher took over the professor’s title from Klint at his own alma mater.
As a furniture designer, Wanscher created pieces in a modern, yet traditional style, often with an inspiration from British 1800th designs. During travels in Europe and Egypt, Wanscher took inspiration from the different architecture and aesthetics, which he used in among others in the Colonial chair and the Colonial sofa. Wanscher created his most important furniture from the late 1940s to the late 1960s, and he took a great interest in industrially produced but still high-quality, furniture.
Wanscher also designed interiors for the Danish Design Museum in Copenhagen and the Danish Institute in Rome. He wrote several books on design history. At the 1960 Triennale di Milano, Wanscher was awarded a gold medal.
Ole Wanscher passed away in 1985 at the age of 82.
