Ristomatti Ratia is the son of the Marimekko-founder Armi Ratia. He studied at Business College Helsinki from 1961 to 1964 and then interior architecture at Leicester Polytechnic until 1967. In the early 1970’s Ratia founded the company Decembre, that produced a variety of design products such as bags and coat hangers. After a couple of years the company was acquired by Mariemekko where Ratia continued as a designer and vice president.
In the 1980’s Ristomatti Ratia founded his own design office from where he created interior products for several manufacturers. One of Ratia’s most well-known designs is the Palaset storage boxes for Treston Oy in 1971.
