The Chinees interior architect and furniture designer Yuqing Tang studied at Konstfack University of Art, Crafts and Design between 2019 and 2022. During this period the travel restrictions due to the Covid pandemic did not allow Tang to visit her home country which was very frustrating for her. To keep in touch with the family, Tang was referred to texts messages and voice mails.
For her degree project, Tang designed the method The Warping Voices, as a way of using human voices to warp a 3-dimensional shape into a more complex and fluid new form. Tang wanted to add a layer of human complexity into furniture design, as her statement in opposition to the dominant design language of minimalism, which tends to “erase” all messiness and complexity. “For me, emotional and complex are what humans truly are”, stated Tang. The result was a series of furniture, based on a voice message from Tang’s grandmother in China.
The Warping Voices was a part of the Ex-Works 2022 exhibition at the Museum of Furniture Studies. Since her graduation, Yuqing Tang has commenced a master’s in spatial design at Konstfack.
